Newcastle & the North East

Electrify transport and the North Sea, from a city with a coastline and a conscience.

Proposed by UKIZ · independent · not a government designation

The place

The North East is where Britain's battery and electrification supply chain is being physically assembled, next to offshore wind and subsea engineering built on decades of North Sea work. Newcastle adds ageing and life sciences research, and a university-anchored city centre that people actively like living in.

It is also a region with beaches, Roman walls, Northumberland's dark skies and a cost of living that gives a research or engineering salary unusual reach.

  • A tight, handsome city centre on a steep river gorge
  • Coastline and castles half an hour north
  • Industrial engineering inheritance on the Tyne and Wear
  • Strong regional identity and civic pride
  • Some of the darkest skies in England in Northumberland

Why Newcastle & the North East?

Electrify transport and the North Sea, from a city with a coastline and a conscience.

  • Battery and electrification supply chain investment at industrial scale.
  • Offshore wind and subsea engineering with real North Sea operating experience.
  • Ageing, life sciences and population health research in Newcastle.
  • Housing costs that make a family life on one technical salary realistic.
  • Northumberland's coast, national park and dark skies within an hour of the office.

The region is far from London and its venture capital, and the labour market is narrower than the big southern cities. Both matter when planning a career here.

What's happening here

Britain is building, and a lot of it is here.

A life, not just a job.

Enough to imagine the place from anywhere in the world. UKIZ does not maintain cost, transport or event data — each line names the body that does.

After work

What you would do with the rest of your week.

Editorial characterisation, not a directory. UKIZ is describing what the place feels like, not listing venues.

  • Coast

Long sand beaches thirty minutes from the centre, empty for most of the year.

  • Nights out

A city that takes going out seriously and does not charge London prices for it.

  • History

Hadrian's Wall, castles and industrial heritage within easy reach.

  • Dark skies

Northumberland has some of the darkest skies in England — genuinely worth the drive.

What else is within reach

Where else you can be, and how easily.

Journey times and routes change. Each line names the body that maintains the detail rather than restating a number.

What to know

The honest part.

A place with no trade-offs is a brochure. These are the things people actually find difficult here.

  • Distance from London

Around three hours by rail; plan for it if your customers are southern.

  • Narrower job market

Fewer employers in any given specialism than Manchester or Leeds.

  • Winter

Dark, cold and windy from November; the coast is bracing rather than mild.

Connected elsewhere in Britain

No place does this alone.
