Why Britain

Britain has a lot to work with.

Universities, research, industrial capability, capital, talent and globally connected cities already exist here.

Britain is building. You just have to know where to look.

What Britain already has

  • Universities and research

Globally respected universities and research capability across science, engineering, medicine, technology, creative disciplines and business.

  • Science and research

Established capability across life sciences, AI, advanced materials, engineering biology, quantum, semiconductors, robotics and space.

  • Entrepreneurship

A well-established base of founders, start-ups, scale-ups, advisers and experienced operators.

  • Capital

London is a major financial centre. UKIZ maps where stronger bridges could be built between research, entrepreneurs, companies and capital.

  • Intellectual property

A mature, trusted intellectual-property framework, so ideas can be protected, owned, financed, licensed and commercialised.

  • Rule of law

International investors and businesses understand and trust British legal and commercial institutions.

  • Language and time zone

English is the dominant international language of business, science and investment. The working day overlaps with Asia, the Gulf, Europe and North America in turn.

  • Geography

The UK is geographically compact. Universities, cities, airports, financial institutions and industrial clusters sit relatively close together. In practice that means most of the country is a day trip, so a specialist five hours away is still workable.

Where the capability is

Research, industry and capital are already distributed across Britain.

Each point on the map is a place where capability, companies and universities already cluster. UKIZ reads and connects them; it does not create them.
