Norwich & the East
Plant science, genomics and offshore wind, between the Broads and the North Sea.
Proposed by UKIZ · independent · not a government designation
The place
Norwich Research Park is one of Europe's largest concentrations of plant science, genomics and food security research, sitting in a region that also builds and services the offshore wind farms in the southern North Sea.
Norwich itself is a small medieval city with a very large bookshop-to-person ratio, the Broads on one side and a long, empty coastline on the other.
- A compact medieval city with a big research park
- Plant science and genomics at European scale
- Offshore wind operations along the coast
- The Broads and a long, quiet coastline
- Genuinely rural surroundings, not commuter countryside
Why Norwich & the East?
Plant science, genomics and offshore wind, between the Broads and the North Sea.
- Plant science, genomics and microbiology research concentrated on one park.
- Food security and agri-technology research with commercial application.
- Offshore wind construction, operations and maintenance along the coast.
- Clinical research through the university hospital and research institutes.
- Low housing costs, and coast and wetland within half an hour.
The region is rural and transport links to the rest of the country are slower than the map suggests. The local investment ecosystem is small.
