The place
Liverpool's research strength is unusually specific: infection, vaccines, biomanufacturing and materials chemistry, including automated laboratories where robots run experiments continuously. The port and Freeport give the region something most research cities lack: the ability to make and move physical volume.
The city itself is one of the most distinctive in Britain: Georgian and Victorian on a monumental scale, culturally loud, with a waterfront that still reads as an argument about ambition.
- A monumental waterfront and Georgian quarter
- Music and football woven into daily life, not marketed
- Deep water port with working industrial capacity
- Strong local identity, sharp humour
- The Wirral, north Wales and the Lakes within reach
Why Liverpool City Region?
Work on infection and biomanufacturing in a port city that has never been quiet.
- Infection and vaccine research with an international tropical medicine tradition behind it.
- Biomanufacturing capability that can make material, as well as publish about it.
- Materials chemistry with automated, robotic laboratory infrastructure.
- A deep water port and Freeport for companies that move physical goods.
- Housing costs among the lowest of any major UK city, with a cultural life far above that price.
Private capital is thin and the region carries real deprivation alongside its assets. Neither is hidden here.
