Edinburgh
Work on data and machines that think, in a city that looks like it was drawn.
Proposed by UKIZ · independent · not a government designation
The place
Edinburgh's informatics school is one of the largest in Europe, and the city has turned that into a working economy: data science, applied AI, robotics and a financial services sector with centuries of asset management behind it. Engineering biology and biofoundry work adds a wet-lab dimension most data cities lack.
The city itself is small enough to walk across, built on volcanic rock, and hosts the largest arts festival in the world every August whether the residents want it or not.
- A walkable city of stone, hills and sudden views
- Old Town closes and New Town symmetry, side by side
- Finance and informatics as the two economic pillars
- A festival city for one month, a working capital for eleven
- Beaches, hills and Highlands all within reach
Why Edinburgh?
Work on data and machines that think, in a city that looks like it was drawn.
- Informatics, data science and AI research at a scale unusual for a city this size.
- A financial services sector that has funded and managed money for centuries.
- Robotics and autonomous systems research with testing facilities.
- Engineering biology and biofoundry capability alongside the computational work.
- Hills inside the city, beaches at the end of a bus route and the Highlands within two hours.
Housing costs are the highest in Scotland and the city is dominated by the festival for a month each year. Neither is a small consideration.
What's happening here
Britain is building, and a lot of it is here.

After work
What you would do with the rest of your week.
Editorial characterisation, not a directory. UKIZ is describing what the place feels like, not listing venues.
Hills
Arthur's Seat is a genuine hill in the middle of a capital city; the Pentlands are behind it.
Festival
For one month the city becomes the largest arts festival on earth, for better and worse.
Coast
Portobello beach at the end of a bus route, and the Fife coast across the bridge.
Pubs and food
Old bars that have not been refurbished into anything, and a strong modern restaurant scene.
What else is within reach
Where else you can be, and how easily.
Journey times and routes change. Each line names the body that maintains the detail rather than restating a number.
Glasgow
Frequent direct rail across the Central Belt.
The Highlands
Rail and road routes north from the city.
Edinburgh Airport
European and some long-haul routes, connected by tram.
London
Direct east coast rail services.
What to know
The honest part.
A place with no trade-offs is a brochure. These are the things people actually find difficult here.
Housing costs
The most expensive city in Scotland to rent or buy in.
August
The festival transforms the city, which residents find exhilarating or unbearable in equal numbers.
Weather
Cold, windy and dark in winter; the summer light is the compensation.
