Cornwall & Plymouth

Space communications, marine energy and lithium — in the most beautiful place on this list.

Proposed by UKIZ · independent · not a government designation

The place

The far South West has an unusual set of assets: a satellite communications station with decades of deep-space heritage, marine energy test infrastructure in open Atlantic water, geothermal and lithium extraction projects, and Plymouth's marine science and naval engineering base.

It is also the part of Britain people spend their whole lives trying to move to, with the constraint that the economy is smaller and the housing market is distorted by second homes.

  • Atlantic coast on both sides of a narrow peninsula
  • Satellite ground station heritage at Goonhilly
  • Marine energy testing in real ocean conditions
  • A naval city with serious marine science
  • Seasonal economy and second-home pressure

Why Cornwall & Plymouth?

Space communications, marine energy and lithium — in the most beautiful place on this list.

  • Satellite communications and deep-space ground station capability at Goonhilly.
  • Marine and offshore renewable energy testing in open Atlantic conditions.
  • Geothermal energy and lithium extraction projects in the granite.
  • Marine science and naval engineering concentrated in Plymouth.
  • Coast, moor and light that no other UK ecosystem can offer.

The regional economy is small and seasonal, transport connections are long, and housing affordability is badly affected by second homes and holiday lets.

What's happening here

Britain is building, and a lot of it is here.

Each item below is a real programme, institution or development with a named source. UKIZ does not publish claims it cannot point at.

  • Goonhilly provides deep-space communications services from Cornwall

The station's antennas support satellite and deep-space missions from the Lizard peninsula.

Missions are national communities. This is what each of them looks like from this place.

Your life around this

Why this place, for you specifically.

The same city answers differently depending on why you are asking.

  • If you are studying

Marine and environmental science where the subject is outside the window.

    • University of Plymouth and University of Exeter's Cornwall campuses.
    • Marine biology, environmental science and renewable energy provision.
    • Living costs vary sharply between term-time towns and coastal hotspots.
    • Coast, moor and surf as everyday recreation.
  • If you are building a company

Test in real ocean and satellite conditions, not in a simulation.

    • Open water marine energy test sites with grid connection.
    • Satellite ground station services and space communications capability.
    • Low workspace costs but a small local talent pool.
    • Distance from investors and customers is the main structural challenge.
  • If you are a researcher

Marine, geothermal and space communications research.

    • Marine science and offshore renewable research with sea access.
    • Geothermal and critical minerals research in the granite.
    • Family housing is affordable inland and difficult on the coast.
  • If you are moving from abroad

Beautiful and remote — plan the travel.

    • Cornwall Airport Newquay for limited routes; Exeter and Bristol further east.
    • Long rail journeys to London and the Midlands.
    • A smaller international community than the major cities.
  • If you invest

Energy, minerals and space infrastructure with real assets.

    • Marine energy, geothermal and lithium projects with physical infrastructure.
    • Space communications services with established facilities.
    • Deal flow is thinner and exits take longer than in the major clusters.

A life, not just a job.

Enough to imagine the place from anywhere in the world. UKIZ does not maintain cost, transport or event data — each line names the body that does.

  • Cost positioning

Below London overall, but coastal housing is severely distorted by second homes.

After work

What you would do with the rest of your week.

Editorial characterisation, not a directory. UKIZ is describing what the place feels like, not listing venues.

  • Surf

North coast beaches with consistent Atlantic swell, twenty minutes from most of the county.

  • Coast path

A continuous long-distance path around the whole peninsula.

  • Moor

Dartmoor and Bodmin Moor for genuine wilderness within the region.

  • Food

Fishing ports supplying restaurants that people drive hours to reach.

What else is within reach

Where else you can be, and how easily.

Journey times and routes change. Each line names the body that maintains the detail rather than restating a number.

What to know

The honest part.

A place with no trade-offs is a brochure. These are the things people actually find difficult here.

  • Small economy

Employment options are limited and seasonal in much of the region.

  • Housing pressure

Second homes and holiday lets distort local affordability severely.

  • Distance

Travel to London, the Midlands and airports takes real time.
