Birmingham & the West Midlands

Design the vehicle, find someone within an hour who can actually make the part.

Proposed by UKIZ · independent · not a government designation

The place

The West Midlands is where Britain still makes vehicles and the thousands of components that go into them. Electrification has changed the content of that work rather than ending it: battery research, power electronics and quantum sensing now sit inside the same supply chain culture that has been machining, pressing and casting here for a century.

Birmingham is young, large and genuinely multicultural, with more canal than Venice and the Cotswolds, Shropshire hills and the Peak District all within an easy drive.

  • A manufacturing supply chain with unusual depth
  • One of the youngest big-city populations in Europe
  • Canals, Victorian industry and post-war rebuilding side by side
  • Central to the country — everywhere else is reachable
  • A food scene shaped by generations of migration

Why Birmingham & the West Midlands?

Design the vehicle, find someone within an hour who can actually make the part.

  • Automotive engineering and electrification programmes with global manufacturers in the region.
  • Battery and power electronics research linked directly to industrial users.
  • Quantum sensing research with practical gravity and navigation applications.
  • A tier-two and tier-three supplier base that can prototype and produce.
  • The most central location in Britain for rail and road logistics.

The region's venture capital base is modest relative to its industrial weight, and the city's post-war road planning still shapes how it feels to move around.

What's happening here

Britain is building, and a lot of it is here.

Each item below is a real programme, institution or development with a named source. UKIZ does not publish claims it cannot point at.

  • The West Midlands holds one of the deepest automotive supply chains in Europe

Vehicle manufacture and component supply remain concentrated in the region through electrification.

Where could this take you?

What pursuing your field here would actually mean.

Missions are national communities. This is what each of them looks like from this place.

Your life around this

Why this place, for you specifically.

The same city answers differently depending on why you are asking.

  • If you are studying

Several large universities in the youngest big city in Europe.

    • University of Birmingham, Aston, Birmingham City and Coventry and Warwick nearby.
    • Engineering and manufacturing courses with placement routes into industry.
    • Living costs well below London with a large student social scene.
    • Central rail links make the rest of the country easy to reach.
  • If you are building a company

Prototype hardware where the supply chain still exists.

    • Machining, pressing, casting and tooling suppliers within an hour's drive.
    • Battery and electrification research facilities open to companies.
    • Industrial and workspace costs well below the South East.
    • Support through the combined authority and university innovation campuses.
  • If you are a researcher

Applied engineering research with manufacturers in the room.

    • Battery, power electronics and materials research with industrial partners.
    • Quantum sensing research moving into field applications.
    • Affordable family housing across the region.
  • If you are moving from abroad

A truly multicultural city with its own international airport.

    • Birmingham Airport for European and some long-haul routes.
    • Direct rail to London in under two hours.
    • Large, established communities from South Asia, the Caribbean, Africa and Eastern Europe.
  • If you invest

Industrial technology with a manufacturing route to market.

    • Electrification, materials and sensing companies with supply chain access.
    • University spin-outs across engineering and physical sciences.
    • Fewer local funds than the South East; syndication is often necessary.

A life, not just a job.

Enough to imagine the place from anywhere in the world. UKIZ does not maintain cost, transport or event data — each line names the body that does.

  • Cost positioning

Housing costs well below London and the South East. UKIZ does not maintain rent figures.

After work

What you would do with the rest of your week.

Editorial characterisation, not a directory. UKIZ is describing what the place feels like, not listing venues.

  • Food

Balti, Caribbean, Polish and Michelin-starred, sometimes on the same street.

  • Canals

More navigable canal than you expect, and towpaths that make good running routes.

  • Music

A heavy industrial musical inheritance and a very active grassroots scene.

  • Countryside

Shropshire, the Cotswolds and the Peak District in three different directions.

What else is within reach

Where else you can be, and how easily.

Journey times and routes change. Each line names the body that maintains the detail rather than restating a number.

What to know

The honest part.

A place with no trade-offs is a brochure. These are the things people actually find difficult here.

  • Capital is modest

Investment activity is small relative to the region's industrial scale.

  • Getting around

Post-war road planning still dominates; public transport is improving but uneven.

  • One region, many centres

Coventry, Wolverhampton and the Black Country have their own economies and identities.
