AI is not a twelfth Zone. It is what makes the other 11 stronger.
UKIZ organises Britain around 11 Innovation Zones: clusters with an immovable physical basis and a real reason to concentrate. Artificial intelligence has neither: its compute is allocated nationally and used remotely, and its value shows up inside other supply chains. So UKIZ treats AI as a capability that runs across the whole network rather than a place of its own.
Nothing has been lost in the move. AI roles, developments, events and evidence are all retained below, and every Zone that AI materially strengthens now says so on its own page.

Turn Britain's AI research advantage into British AI companies, applied systems and retained value
Britain has deep AI research, a deep applied talent base and comparatively little of the compute, capital and commercial scale needed to keep the value here. The mission is applied AI with British customers, British infrastructure and British ownership, not another wave of research that is commercialised elsewhere.
Why it matters
- AI is now an input to almost every other Innovation Zone, from drug discovery to autonomy to grid optimisation.
- Research leadership without compute, capital and commercial scale produces exported value, not British companies.
- Sovereign capability in models, data and infrastructure is becoming a national security and economic question, not only a technology one.
Outcomes to test
- British AI companies scaled and retained under British ownership
- Compute and data access that is a route, not a barrier
- AI deployed inside the other eleven Zones with measurable industrial effect
Current geographic hypothesis: Distributed. Core capability concentrates around London, Cambridge, Oxford and Edinburgh, with applied depth in Manchester, Bristol, Leeds and the Golden Triangle's spin-out corridor.. Indicative geography only: no site has been selected.
